Christmas in the Workhouse

The Society had a very enjoyable and educational visit to Weaver Hall yesterday evening followed by a lively get together in The Swan.

Further ideas for a Society blog

I have extended this test blog to show how it might help the Society. This simple weblog is like a noticeboard or rather one main board, carrying news or 'posts', and accompanying mini-boards or 'pages'.

Features of such a blog include:
  • It's relatively simple to run and it's free
  • It's currently set up so that anyone knowing its link can access.
  • Only registered members (eg members with email addresses entered by the 'administrator') can add posts
  • The pages (those such as 'Events' labels across the top) can provide more detail
  • A key feature is the ability to add links
  • Links can be to other websites (see Wright Manley link in 'Sponsors') or perhaps more relevantly to documents or pictures (a trivial example in 'Publications' set up currently in my Google documents area)
  • Documents can be private or public and could be editted on line as appropriate
  • One can add pictures to the blog directly (be aware of copyright) or via links to Flickr etc
  • People can add comments subject to any imposed access restrictions
  • One can play around with fonts, colours, backgrounds etc but a simple design may be best
Clearly one could set up a more elaborate website but my argument is start simple and move up to more expensive (time and money) options later. A critical aspect is to keep the blog up to date. This is perhaps easier with a simple blog.

What's this all about

This is an experiment to see whether this weblog would help the Society better publicise its activities and better communicate with its members.
